McWillie Elementary School / Jackson, MS - Design of a new, urban K-2 elementary school facility serving
625 learners including a Montessori program. The design
uses the “House Plan” where learners are subdivided
into smaller families of 125 in five single-story child-scaled
“houses.” Each “house” contains five learning areas/classrooms,
a central family room for larger gatherings and a project
kitchen for hands-on learning. During the planning and
programming process, we developed design guidelines with
the Educational Design Institute in Starkville that serve as a
guide for future elementary school projects for the district.
2003 Citation Award – Design Share, The International
